The Age of the Soda Fountains

    In 1919, bars had to be closed down due to prohibition of alcohol, and so soda fountains opened up in its place.  Soda fountains were very popular hang outs, especially among the teens.  The reason it was so popular was because teen were able to relax after school listening to rock and roll, gossip and eat sweets.  The majority of the soda fountains started out in pharmacies, some of the favorites at the time were banana splits, hot fudge sundaes, flavored sodas, phosphates, shakes and malts and they only cost a nickel or a dime.  Nowadays, soda fountains are displayed in museums. 

Drive-Ins

Teens found many ways to entertain themselves and have fun.  Teens would watch a lot of television but they would also go to Drive-ins, a drive-in was a place where people parked their cars in front of a huge screen and hooked speakers onto their rolled-down window to hear the dialogue and music.  In 1958, there were four to five thousand drive-ins in the United States. Many of the movies were Sci-Fi movies, but they were low budget quickies for the teens. Some of the popular cheap teen movies that played in the drive-in was, "Not of This Earth" and "The Attack of the Crab Monsters". 

BOWLING

   In the 1950's, bowling started to come out on television. On NBC, they aired the "Championship Bowling" game. That was the first game of bowling ever to be aired. After the championship game was on television, shows of bowling started to become popular. Celebrities came out in bowling shows called, "Celebrity Bowling", making bowling a more popular sport. Another hit show was, "Bowling for Dollars". Many people across America, signed up to be on the show that were good athletes at bowling. After all the publicity of bowling, it became a major sport for people. Eddie Elia, founder of Pro Bowlers Tour, put bowling on ABC. Millions of people became more interested in the sport of bowling, during the 1950s.
